1960年代に全英トップ10シングル「アズ・ティアーズ・ゴー・バイ」のリリースで人気を博したイギリスの歌手、女優。アメリカにおけるブリティッシュ・インベイジョンの主要な女性アーティストの一人となった。ロンドンのハムステッド生まれ。ローリング・ストーンズのパーティーに出席した際、バンドのマネージャーであるアンドリュー・ルーグ・オールダムに見出され、1964年にキャリアをスタートさせた。1965年のデビュー・アルバム『マリアンヌ・フェイスフル』は、アルバム『カム・マイ・ウェイ』と同時にリリースされ、大成功を収めた。その後もデッカ・レコードからアルバムを次々と発表した。1966年から1970年にかけて、ミック・ジャガーとの交際で世間の注目を浴びた。また、『唇からナイフ』（1967年）、『あの胸にもういちど』（1968年）、『ハムレット』（1969年）などの映画出演によって、その人気はさらに高まった。1970年代に入ると、拒食症やホームレス生活、ヘロイン中毒といった個人的な問題により、その人気には影が差した。1960年代の音楽キャリアにおいて、フェイスフルは独特のメロディックな高音域の歌声で知られていた。しかし、その後の10年間で、重度の喉頭炎と絶え間ない薬物乱用により声質が変化し、永久的にしわがれ、ひび割れたような低い声となった。長い空白期間を経て、1979年、批評家から絶賛された7枚目のスタジオ・アルバム『ブロークン・イングリッシュ』のリリースで音楽界に復帰した。このアルバムは商業的にも成功を収め、彼女の音楽キャリアの復活を象徴するものとなった。『ブロークン・イングリッシュ』でグラミー賞の最優秀女性ロック・ボーカル・パフォーマンス賞にノミネートされ、この作品はフェイスフルの「決定盤」と見なされている。その後、『デンジャラス・アクアィンタンス』（1981年）、『チャイルズ・アドベンチャー』（1983年）、『ストレンジ・ウェザー』（1987年）といった一連のスタジオ・アルバムを立て続けに発表した。2009年のウィメンズ・ワールド・アワードでワールド・ライフタイム・アチーブメント賞を受賞し、2011年にはフランス政府から芸術文化勲章のコマンドゥールを授与された。
