Maria Callas (マリア・カラス)。アメリカの女性オペラ歌手。1923年12月2日生まれ。1977年9月16日没。
アメリカ生まれのギリシャ出身のソプラノで、20世紀で最も有名で影響力のあるオペラ歌手の一人であった。ベルカント奏法、幅広い声域、ドラマチックな解釈を多くの批評家が賞賛した。レパートリーは古典的なオペラ・セリアから、ドニゼッティ、ベッリーニ、ロッシーニのベルカント・オペラ、さらにはヴェルディやプッチーニの作品、またキャリア初期にはワーグナーの音楽劇にまで及んでいた。その音楽的、演劇的才能から、ラ・ディヴィーナ（「神聖なるもの」）と呼ばれるようになった。ニューヨークのマンハッタンでギリシャ系移民の両親のもとに生まれ、13歳のときにギリシャで音楽教育を受け、その後、イタリアでキャリアを積んだ。1940年代の戦時下の貧困と、舞台上でほとんど目が見えないほどの近視を抱え、苦難とスキャンダルに耐えながら、キャリアを積んでいった。特に、キャリア半ばで体重を落としたことが、声の衰えとキャリアの早期終了につながったともいわれている。。レナード・バーンスタインが「オペラの聖書」と呼ぶほどの芸術的業績があり、その影響力は絶大で、2006年、オペラニュースはカラスについて「死後30年近くたった今でも、彼女は芸術家としての歌姫の定義であり、クラシック音楽で最も売れている声楽家の一人である。」と記している。
