Byron Janis (バイロン・ジャニス)

Byron Janis (バイロン・ジャニス)。アメリカの男性ピアニスト。1928年3月24日生まれ。

8歳までアブラハム・リトウに師事。ピッツバーグでジャニスの演奏を聴いたウラディミール・ホロヴィッツは、すぐにジャニスを弟子にした。ジャニスは1944年から1948年までホロヴィッツの下で学んだ。作曲家としても活躍し、1993年のオフブロードウェイ(Off Broadway)で上演された『ノートルダムの鐘』（The Hunchback of Notre Dame）のスコアも作曲した。1967年にフランスのChateau de Thoiryで、ショパンの新たに発見したワルツ2曲の現行を演奏した。後年、ジャニスはイェール大学でその2曲のワルツの別バージョンを発見し、この2曲のワルツは、1978年にショパン作曲、バイロンジャニス編として出版されている。録音も数多く行い、ラフマニノフ、リストのピアノ協奏曲などがリリースされている。1973年に手と手首の重度の関節炎になっており、1984年にそのことを発表した。手の手術の後回復し、演奏と録音を再開した。2012年に関節炎の支援運動の功績で、生涯功労賞を授与された。フランス政府からレジオン・ドヌール勲章を贈られたほか、音楽活動や録音に対して様々な賞を受けている。イェール大学から名誉博士号を贈られている。妻はアメリカの俳優ゲイリー・クーパーの娘のマリア・クーパー。
